BEHIND THE IDEA

Designing around a routine

Keeping track of a routine can be a design problem as well as an organizational one. In this Q LAB episode, a pill box becomes the starting point for a prototype that combines separate compartments with a display and electronics. The video follows the move from a recognizable problem to a physical object that can be demonstrated.

A reminder must be understandable

The compartments organize the physical contents, while the display provides another way to communicate information. Together, they invite questions about usability: can someone quickly recognize the relevant compartment, read the information and understand what the reminder means? These questions matter when judging the design beyond whether its electronics turn on.

A prototype, with a clear purpose

The episode presents an engineering experiment. It does not establish that the device prevents missed doses or medication errors, and it does not provide instructions about medicines. The central idea is how a small interface can support an existing routine and make a design concept testable.
